How Should Christians View Homosexuality?

There is a great debate among Christians today concerning the issue of homosexuality. I should say there are two great debates on this topic because any questions we have concerning this top necessarily are framed within two very different contexts: (1) How should Christians view homosexuality in society and secular culture? (2) How should Christians address the issue of homosexuality within the Church?

I will address the second question in my next post on The Church & Same-sex Marriage. As an introduction to that topic, you will find below the thoughts on the subject of homosexuality from some of today's top Christian theologians.

The church began in power, moved in power, and moved just as long as she had power. When she no longer had power she dug in for safety and sought to conserve her gains. But her blessings were like the manna: when they tried to keep it overnight it bred worms and stank.” A. W. Tozer
…okay, this guy is just mean… or honest?

He said to them:

A large crop is in the fields, but there are only a few workers. Ask the Lord in charge of the harvest to send out workers to bring it in.(Luke 10:2 CEB)

Bible Interpretation: It Depends on How You Look at It

because God’s word is living, active, and sharper than any two-edged sword. It penetrates to the point that it separates the soul from the spirit and the joints from the marrow. It’s able to judge the heart’s thoughts and intentions. -Hebrews 4:12 (CEB)

Interpreting the Bible correctly should be a matter of the utmost concern to Christians. The problem is there are often conflicting interpretations of important passages of Scripture. How do people reach such contradictory conclusions? How can I know whether my interpretation of a passage is correct? Our task is to discover what a text really means, and to settle for less than the correct meaning is to settle for something other than the very Word of God. We have to make the assumption that there is one correct interpretation for each passage of Scripture. The author meant something specific when he wrote it.

There are several important factors to consider in coming to a correct interpretation of a passage of the Bible and in judging between competing interpretations. They include:

  • Grammatical-Historical Interpretation
  • The Original Languages
  • Meaning and Use of Words in Context
  • Grammar and Syntax of the Biblical Languages
  • The Historical-Cultural Settings of the Bible
  • Historical Background
  • Cultural Background
  • The Literary Genres of the Bible
I have listed below some of the basic resources that I have found invaluable in determining the correct interpretation of any passage of Scripture:

A Fresh Look at Scripture

Every scripture is inspired by God and is useful for teaching, for showing mistakes, for correcting, and for training character, -2 Timothy 3:16 (CEB)

We must be willing to take a fresh look at Scripture, putting our doctrinal and theological biases aside. Rather than looking for Scriptures that support what we've been taught or want to believe, we should let the Bible, itself. teach us.

"Some think asking questions is a sign of a lack of faith, I can't imagine any kind of mature faith without questions." Kent Dobson (Pastor - Mars Hill Bible Church.)

The Beroean Jews were more honorable than those in Thessalonica. This was evident in the great eagerness with which they accepted the word and examined the scriptures each day to see whether Paul and Silas’ teaching was true.
-Acts 17:10-12 (CEB) Acts 17 (Whole Chapter)

The Church: From Stagnant to Vibrant

The Lord proclaims:
Stop at the crossroads and look around;
    ask for the ancient paths.
    Where is the good way?
Then walk in it
and find a resting place for yourselves.
But you said, “We won’t go!”

-Jeremiah 6:16 (CEB)

I am quite hopeful that the bride of Christ is finding her way back to her original vocation by re-thinking the meaning of church. I see people today being more willing to take a fresh look at Scripture and fearlessly questioning the validity of some of the classic doctrines that have developed over time.

There is a long overdue breath of fresh air beginning to be exhaled from the Church into the world!

"...there is a substantial critical mass of people and churches that are already moving.' ...While acknowledging that there are still many unhealthy churches, there is a justified 'change in basic premises, basic attitudes, basic mind set... on the whole, we are on the march...." -Peter Drucker
